SINGAPOREAN STOKE!
From girl to girls, I am very happy to see that in Singapore Longboard is developing well.
But i really want to know more ( next time I go there I want to be ready ^__^)
Introduce Yourself (name, age, profession):
Wana Zainal / 25 / Programme Executive
- When did you started skating? Why? Where?
Started back in 2008. Unintentionally. Was actually tagging along with my fiance, Azmil and his buddy, Fuzz to longboard sessions, just to take photos and video for them, edit and post it online. Curiousity got me trying to stand on the board for the first time and got hooked till now! Without the support of them guys, i wouldn’t be so stoked over the years. They pushed me to my over my limits and i manage to slowly and steadily overcome my fears. Though they don’t skate frequently like years back due to work commitments, i carried on their legacy and keep the passion burning, passing on the knowledge to others. I chanced upon Silverfish Longboarding Forum in 2009, and that’s where i met other longboarders, and planned some sessions with them. I have been skating mainly in Singapore only..for now :)
- What are you riding now?
Loaded Dervish Flex 2
Paris 195 Trucks
Orangatang Stimulus 86A
- The first one?
Nope! Got a 2nd hand complete from Fuzz, a Sector 9 Goddess. Sold it off.
Got a 2nd hand customised setup Loaded Vanguard for carving the roads :) Sold off the deck as it’s top mount is too “high” and unstable for my mongo stance, and bought a Dervish to replace it.
- How is the community over Singapore? How many crews and people do you have longboarding there? More girls or guys?
The community is well growing!! The peak was actually last year, alot of skate shops started bringing in complete setups from all kinds of brands. Based on the known FB group, Singapore Speed Movement, we have about 2,800 members in it, both active and inactive i presume, some just poking their nose to know what’s going on in this community. There’s quite a handful of crews/groups that is recognised, some professional and some amateurs, a few are based on the name of the location that they skate at. To name a few, Team XIII, Skkrett, East Side Barrio, FTW, Broness, SBT (Skate Buddies Temasek), Chillax, Bankface Friday, Halfway Anchovies, Adrenaline Junkies, SGCC (Singapore City Cruisers), etc…
Okayyy…come to think of it, there’s too many of them! Hahh..Singapore is just a small dot on the map, yet there’s too many crews i think, ironically!! Like mentioned, these groups are based in FB. Most of the times, they share locations and have a combined shred session. Though the numerous crews, we all are kinda united actually, supporting each other during competitions and get everyone recognised for their achievements. They are all always around to share a tip or two..if you ask them nicely, rub shoulders with them, or..err.. *wink wink* hahah!!
Local skateshops here (Spitfire Skate, LBLove, etc..) and also online sellers (2XFive) played a major role in this community. Organising and endless support for each and every event. Without them, i guess local riders won’t go places..
Everyone deserves a pat on the back! It’s a group effort nonetheless!
- When did Longboard arrive to Singapore? How?
I guess it started way long time ago, probably 2002 or even earlier. First few longboard completes available were SurfOne, Santa Cruz, Turbo. All-rounder boards!!
People i knew whom started longboarding are skimboarders and surfers. They can’t get waves at night, so they shred instead. And the reason Azmil and Fuzz took up longboarding was because of the fasting month. As fasting month doesn’t permit us Muslims to eat or drink during the day, they longboard to stay away from the waters in case they unintentionally swallow them while skimboarding..heheh…
- Since you started skating with them has the group grown?
It definitely did. It’s like an addiction. Hahah.. One by one we have friends and family members who are interested in this sport. We introduce longboarding to them and let them try it out. Of course, there’s a few that come and go. Though sometimes they will just pop by our sesh and hang around.
- Who had the idea of a Girl Crew? How does it work? Do you skate separately or have separate events? Tell me more I am very curious!!!!
I initiated Girls’ Ride Out SG (http://www.facebook.com/groups/GRO.sg/) Facebook group sometime in 2010. As the description goes:
Girls’ Ride Out is an initiative for all girl longboarders in Singapore. We aim to grow the numbers in this sport amongst the community regardless of age or boards. It’s all about meeting up new people, ride on all style aspects and most importantly, HAVE FUN.
For the ladies, by the ladies.
Reason being, WHY NOT?! I met alot of new friends at regular skate spots. That’s where i met other girls who skates too. Unlike me, i’m into carving, they do downhill and technical slides, etc. I was keen to learn from them, as girls tend to be more patient than guys! That gave me a spark to start up this girls-only group. Hoping to benefit girls whom are really keen in learning, yet are shy.
The main focus was to gather girl longboarders and meet up. To share knowledge and have fun, yes just PURE FUN! So far the events organised varied. As we welcome more girls into the sport, my intention is to make them feel welcomed and strengthen the friendship and bond amongst the girls. As of today, 170 members, someday hoping we get every girl in the group to participate in our events! Nothing competitive, nothing serious, our sessions are all laid back. Of course, the girls in this group comprised of members from other crews mentioned above. This group also gives the opportunity for them to find skaters who stays around the same area and have impromptu skate sessions :)
After getting to know about Longboard Girls Crew last year, i approached Jacky Madenfrost about launching LGC Singapore, thus she gave me the opportunity for the role. She introduced me to Lennat Mak, we had coffee and discussed our goals. Both of us are currently ambassadors for Singapore :) LGC SG is now actively a platform to share local and international longboard news and event updates. We might be blooming at a slower pace than other regions, but the support have been wonderful from friends and family. It open doors for us, we received quite a handful of projects locally and also internationally, working with other LGC ambassadors from all around the world is so much fun! I’ve never imagined getting to liaise with so many well-known longboarders!! In Singapore term, SO SHIOKKK!!
- Do you have a lot of events taking place?
Locally? Or as in the girls crew event? Nvm, i’ll just provide with both :)
Locally:
We have our annual Push Race and ECP. This year March was the 2nd time running. Concurrently there was longboard dance competition and fingerboard competition.
We also have events organised by local skateshops. Downhill, time-attack, slide comp, longest standies, etc..The events varies over period of time. Say about 1 major event and 3 unofficial events yearly on average.
Girls event:
Me and a few girls often have regular sessions at ECP Xtreme Skatepark Bowl. We do have 101 sessions previously and planning to do more upon requests. Most of us enjoy cruising sessions. We’ve had a couple of them at different locations. We’ve had halloween cruise session for two years straight. Dressed up all bloody and scare the hell out of the public as we cruise around the town areas :)
- Which were the first LB brands to arrive in Singapore?
As mentioned above, the first few brands were SurfOne, Santa Cruz and Turbo.
I was introduced to Loaded and Original boards when i just started.
Yes we do. Miz29 is a local skateshop and just recently brought in beginner complete setup at a very low affordable price.
- Which are more spread: the local boards or the imported ones?
Definitely imported ones. More variety for all aspects of longboarding.
- For beginners?
Miz29, Turbo. Depends on each own budget right? ;P
- Which are the best spots in town and out of town?
It differs for which aspects of longboarding. All the location depends on the level of competency.
ECP Skatepark, Rifle Range Road, Labrador, Halfway, Vicom, Labrador, etc..
- Have you been in other countries around Singapore to skate?
Nope, soon!!
- How is the relationship with the government there?
Last year itself 2 longboarding accidents made it to the local papers. One was fatal, the other was a narrow escape. This happened when the sport was at it’s peak and featured in papers. Most of the events we get the approval from the authorities, while some are just “underground”. In Singapore, it’s simple, you don’t cause danger and harm to the public, then “they” won’t disturb us :) Most of the time the roads that we play on have less or no traffic, usually at night. We do get screened overtime by police officers on patrol and get a warning to just stay safe and aware of surroundings.
- If I go to Singapore taking my board with me, how many possibilities do I have to meet other longboarders?
I’m sure before you even go anywhere, you’ll do abit of research on the scene there. Ah, the power of world wide web and Facebook. Hahah!! There’s a couple of occasions i get messages and emails from longboarders heading to Singapore and asking about skate spots. I’ll definitely recommend them to Singapore Speed Movement fb page. Not all of us are free on normal working days, so those who are available will gladly meet up for a session or two.
- What is the X Factor of Longboard in your opinion?
Cool? Commercial? Well it’s actually the in thing here in Singapore. I mean that’s how kids nowadays see the sport as. Everyone wanna buy a longboard. Everyone wants to be seen on one. I foresee the trend will die out soon. Only those passionate about it stays on..we’ll just have to wait and see yea..
- Future skating plans?
SKATE TRIP IN JUNE! Yes first ever organised for the girls, by the girls. HAHAAHH! We are so stoked watching LGC’s videos and that made us wanna have one for our own!
Other than that, me, Lennat and Nazerah (co-founder of Heyday Streetwear http://www.facebook.com/HeydayWear. Do check them out!) just got a big tarp locally. We are ready to have Tarp Surfing here in Singapore! Woohooo!!
Thank You a lot!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Keep on riding!
milesto asked: G'day mate, wicked blog, i'm from australia ride hard, shred harder !
Hey nice to meet you!
Thanks!!!!! I am doing a master thesis on this, also…that is the double wicked! ^__^
Sorry If I ‘catch the moment’ but do you think I can ask you a couple of simple questions on Australia’s LB world?
That would be awesome! I read a couple of issues on heels-mag but it it’s always nice to have a ‘personal’ story!!!!

WHAT THE HOUSE!
This competes with Bastard’s store- Warehouse in Milan!
Skateboarding star Pierre Andre Senizergues wanted to skate over every surface of his new house, inside and out, so he turned to Californian architect Francois Perrin plus designer and skater Gil Lebon Delapoint to make it a reality.
